threshold

She likes to go to al the thresholds of our house.Beating me to them, crawling over and over the same step again and again. Crawling to the open front door:

Going in and out.
She's trying it out. I can see her brain figuring out the mystery to these doorways, these places between two rooms. Between the outside and inside. Between up and down.

She always looks at me to see what I have to say about her border crossings.
I give her the A-OK, the reassurance that she can keep going back and forth as many times as she wants.
The rest of us rush through the door and run over the step. We don't look back. We take these thresholds for granted.
She still sees them as magical divides.
And I love that.
